Idaho residents, take advantage of the Idaho Education Tax Credit!

Donations to the Idaho State University Foundation are eligible for a 50% Idaho state tax credit reduction in the actual tax you owe. Additionally, if you itemize deductions, a donation to ISU may enable you to get income reductions on both your state and federal returns, plus a 50% Idaho income tax credit.

For 2019, the allowed credit for both personal and business gifts remains:

  • Idaho individuals may take as a tax credit up to 50% of a gift of $1,000 (a tax credit of $500)
  • Idaho married couples may take as a tax credit up to 50% of a gift of $2,000 (a tax credit of $1,000)

Your tax benefit is dependent on your personal income level and filing status. Please contact your tax consultant for additional information.

Idaho residents, Benny and Betty Bengal, are a married couple who itemize their taxes. Their combined adjusted gross income is about $78,000 (which puts them in the 22% federal tax bracket). They decide to donate $2,000 to the Dean's Excellence Fund at Idaho State University in 2019.

Their contribution, if they itemized deductions, qualifies for:

  • A $2,000 federal income tax deduction (saving $440 federal income tax at the 22% rate); plus
  • A $138 Idaho income tax reduction (at the 6.925% rate); plus
  • The $1,000 Idaho Education tax credit for a joint return

Taking the deductions and credit together, the Bengals' $2,000 gift to ISU has a true out-of-pocket "cost" of only $442.
